Soothing Wave II

From the artist William De La Mare: This photograph of a bursting wave juxtaposes the energy of the ocean meeting the rocks, with the calm, gentle softness of the natural blue color of the scene.

I often like to have the entire tonal range represented in my photographs, but with this photograph, to honor its softness of color, I set the tones to favor that softness, to allow the energized vitality of the image to settle into that overall calm. While I would not design a work specifically to reference a pre-existing tradition, this photograph inevitably references impressionism in painting.

I enjoy seeing references to other forms of art appearing in the water photographs. It is a positive association for me to be reminded of artists I have admired, and of movements of consideration that have occurred within the evolution of perceptive awareness.
